Hillsboro for Sailfish, Wahoo and Kingfish

Report Date: February 26, 2014

Fishing in Fort Lauderdale has been hit or miss for the last few days with no wind and a flat sea. Our customers are enjoying sunny South Florida weather, but it's making fishing a little slow. In spite of dealing with our "good weather," we've had some nice catches and happy anglers. The recent variety of fish include mahi, blackfin tuna, African pompano, sailfish and wahoo.

On Friday afternoon, Pierre Montreuil of Canada caught his first sailfish on a live goggle eye while kite fishing off Hillsboro inlet. We also caught a few blackfin tuna.

On Saturday morning, we fished with Joe Bosco, a regular customer, and some family members from Michigan. I decided to go north again. With a flat sea, no wind to fly the kite and a light south current, I decided to slow troll live goggle eyes and pilchards. We started in green water and missed a few kingfish bites. With time running out and only a few nondescript bites, Joe – who's always had good luck when fishing with us - asked me jokingly: "What's Plan B?" Well since you asked, I reasoned the last few hours of the incoming tide might be good further offshore. So we moved a little deeper and found a blue water edge in 185', in front of Hillsboro Inlet. Soon, Joe and Gary had a double header wahoo! A personal first time wahoo for both of them, and a nice way to finish the trip.

Later the same day on another afternoon charter, the wind picked-up and we again fished the Hillsboro area. We put up the kite, slung a few live goggle eyes, and our angler, Francis, soon had his first sailfish ever! I absolutely love it when I can be the captain to give an angler their first sailfish - awesome! The trip also produced a few nice kingfish and an African pompano in that same area off the Steeple and Hillsboro. So come with us and enjoy beautiful South Florida weather!
